Desalination

• Distillation:  Boiling water and condensing the vapor, leaving behind the unwanted dissolved solids.
• Reverse Osmosis:  Pressurizing sea water up against a special membrane that allows only water to pass through, trapping the unwanted ions on the other side of the membrane.
• Capacitive Deionization:  Passing the water between two oppositely charged capacitor plates which draw and hold ions, allowing the clean water to pass through.

• Water is passed through the middle of two oppositely charged electrodes/plates.
• Positively charged ions such as sodium, potassium, & magnesium are attracted to the negatively charged plate.  Negatively charged ions such as chloride, carbonate, & bromide are attracted to the positive.
• The charged electrodes capture and tightly hold the ions.
• Clean water passes through the process cylinder.
• Once full, the ions are released and diverted out of the system.
